Part 1
Two years after a fire left Fallon O’Neil scarred, she meets her father Donovan for lunch and announces her plan to move to New York to pursue a career in acting. Her father discourages her and blames himself for the fire. A young man in a neighboring booth intervenes, insults Fallon’s father and becomes her fake boyfriend for the day. Fallon finds him entertaining and invites him to help her pack. They spend the day together and decide to meet once a year on November 9th for five years. They give each other homework to complete before their next meeting.
The following year, Fallon and Ben meet at his house, where she meets his brothers and his fiancée. Kyle, Ben’s brother, is violent towards him and his fiancée is distressed. Fallon witnesses Kyle hit Ben and the two of them end up on the beach. Ben takes Fallon to get a tattoo and then drives her to the airport, surprising her by boarding the plane just to give her homework to reconnect with her father.
Fallon and Ben’s relationship is marked by the anniversary of their first meeting, and they use it as an opportunity to reconnect. They both have unresolved issues with their families and use their homework assignments to work through them. Despite the challenges they face, they remain committed to each other and their annual meetings.
Part 2
Fallon and Ben meet and fall in love in Los Angeles. When they reunite a year later in New York, Ben tells her that Kyle, Fallon’s ex-boyfriend, died in a car accident and can’t meet up with her. Fallon offers support and they become intimate, but when she learns that Ben needs to help his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Jordyn, she decides to end things and continue their “experiment” of meeting up only once a year.
A year later, Ben reveals that he and Jordyn have become a couple. Heartbroken, Fallon ends their experiment. However, Ben later shows up at a club and begs for her to come home with him, explaining that his relationship with Jordyn is over. Fallon agrees, but when she finds Ben’s manuscript about the night of Kyle’s accident and her own injuries, she’s shocked to read Kyle’s claim that Ben started the fire.
Believing that Ben added the twist for fictional purposes, she refuses to listen when Ben tries to explain that the death of his mother is somehow connected to the fire. A year later, Ben leaves a copy of the manuscript on Fallon’s doorstep, and she learns the truth about the night of the fire. They reconcile and pledge their love to each other.
